The left fore plate on RACER FOREVER (USA) (R Mullen) had to be re-fitted at the start. GRAND VISTA (GB) (R Moore) was slow to begin. GRANTLEY ADAMS (GB) (L Dettori) was slow into stride. Approaching the 1000m, LOYALIST (SAF) (M Kinane) lay inwards away from COMANDANTE XARA (BRZ) (K Latham) and in doing so bumped PRINCE TAMINO (GB) (R Ffrench) which in turn shifted inwards bumping RACER FOREVER (USA) with that gelding then bumping heavily with the hind quarters of BIG TIMER (USA) (T Eaves). LOYALIST (SAF) then commenced to over-race and had to be steadied off the heels of COMANDANTE XARA (BRZ) and lose its position. PRINCE TAMINO (GB) also commenced to race ungenerously at this stage of the race and threw its head in the air on several occasions. BIG TIMER (USA) returned with a cut to the left fore. Jockey L Dettori reported that GRANTLEY ADAMS (GB) felt awkward in its action in running. A post race veterinary examination of GRANTLEY ADAMS (GB) revealed no abnormalities.

THE PIRATE (DEN) (E Ski) was examined by the veterinary officer at the starting gates for a cut to its mouth and was declared fit to race. THE PIRATE (DEN) reared on jumping. THIRD SET (IRE) (L Dettori) jumped awkwardly making contact to its outside gate. BECKERMET (IRE) (J Murtagh) shifted in bumping CROSSING (GB) (P Mulrennan) on jumping. The tiring PRIDE OF NATION (IRE) (M Kinane) was tightened for room between THIRD SET (IRE) and METROPOLITAN MAN (GB) (R Mullen) near the 400m. Shortly after this, PRIDE OF NATION (IRE) was eased down. Near the 200m, THIRD SET (IRE) lay inwards and caused METROPOLITAN MAN (GB) to shift inwards onto LAW LORD (GB) (K McEvoy) which was inconvenienced. Jockey P Mulrennan reported that CROSSING (GB) hung outwards in running. When questioned regarding the run of PRIDE OF NATION (IRE), Jockey M Kinane stated that the horse had never traveled well in running and after receiving pressure in the straight the horse had lost its action. Jockey M Kinane then elected to ease the horse down as he believed that it may have been injured. A post race veterinary examination of PRIDE OF NATION (IRE) revealed no abnormalities. THE PIRATE (DEN) returned with a cut to its left fore.
