Near the 1300m TANGERIANO (ARG) (T Durcan) shifted in carrying BO BID (USA) (S Hamel) inwards, with BO BID (USA) eventually steadying from that colt's heels. In the early stages NATIONAL EMERALD (SAF) (W Smith) raced fiercely and near the 1200m dipped when striding onto the heels of AKINFEET (SAF) (R Moore). TANGERIANO (ARG) and AKINFEET (SAF) brushed at the 225m.

FRATERNTIY (GB) was withdrawn at 7.14pm when apprentice C O'Donoghue was unable to make the weight and no substitute rider could be found. Apprentice C O'Donoghue was found guilty to a breach of ERA 58 (iii) for attempting to weigh out without a body protector. He was subsequently suspended from riding in races for 5 days commencing Sunday 19 January 2003. EXPLOSIVO (BRZ) (R Moore) was slow into stride. SICNEE (USA) (R Mullen) jumped awkwardly. At the 500m DREADLOCK (ARG) (M Hussey) baulked and lost considerable ground when attempting a run on the outside of AMMUNITION (USA) (J Murtagh) on the fence. Apprentice M Hussey explained that although there was sufficient room DREADLOCK (ARG) had been reluctant to proceed and had overacted to the situation. Jockey R Mullen (SICNEE (USA)) was fined AED 500 under Ins 8 (h) for using his whip with his arm extended above shoulder height. Trainer Mr A Smith was questioned regarding the improvement in form of PERSUASIVO FITZ (ARG). He advised that the horse's previous season's form had been over a greater distance and that he had attempted to continue in this vein. However PERSUASIVO FITZ (ARG) had raced strongly in the early stages of its previous start and then had faded in the straight. He had consequently reduced the distance to today's 1200m and advised that the horse had been working particularly well. It was now his intention to restrict PERSUASIVO FITZ (ARG) to sprint distances.
