Following instructions by His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai and Vice President of the UAE, the Nad Al Sheba track was laid down in 1986 with the construction of the original Maktoum Grandstand following two years later. The first racing meeting was staged in 1992 with the Maktoum Grandstand undergoing expansion and refurbishment in 1993, 1999 and again in 2000. The futuristic Millennium Grandstand, described as the best of its kind, offering unparalleled viewing and hospitality facilities was opened on Dubai World Cup day 2001.

The left-handed Nad Al Sheba dirt track is 2,254 metres in circumference and 20 metres wide. It has three chutes to accommodate starting points for races scheduled over 2,000 metres, 1,600 metres and 1,200 metres. The 1,200 metres chute provides a straight course for races from 1,000 metres to 1,200 metres. The surface is comprised of a mixture of fine dune sand, silt and clay and 3 inches of cushion are harrowed up daily for training and racing alike. It is routinely harrowed, watered and graded to ensure the going remains constant.

The left-handed Nad Al Sheba turf track is 2,121 metres in circumference and 20 metres wide. It has three chutes to accommodate starting points for races scheduled over 2,000 metres, 1,600 metres and 1,200 metres. The 1,200 metres chute is mainly used to start 2,800-3,200 metres races; all sprint races are started on the main. The grass is a Bermuda hybrid and is planted in local sand termed "sweet soil". It was top-dressed with an inch of peat moss in the summer of 1997 and again in 1998. The grass is kept at 6 inches during the racing season and is over-sown with rye in the autumn. It rides consistently good.
Admission to the public enclosures is free.

Dress code in the public areas is casual.

Dress code in the members lounge, restaurants and hospitality suites is smart, national dress or lounge suit for gentlemen.

Modest dress for ladies is recommended. Ladies are encouraged to wear hats and racewear although this is optional.

Jeans, t-shirts, trainers and shorts are strictly not permitted within the grandstands and parade ring. The only exception to this rule is that smart jeans are permitted to Gainsborough Lounge and the Terrace Bar.

There are usually 6 or 7 races held per night, each at 30 minute intervals. The first race is usually held at 7pm but it is worth checking the website to confirm the start time.
A Pick Six or Seven competition is held every race night. Competition details and entry forms are available in the evenings racecard.
Soft drinks and snacks are available to the left of the grandstand area. Licensed bar and restaurant facilities are available in the Clubhouse and in the Millennium Grandstand.
Packages and proposals can be tailor made to meet all requirements. Enquiries should be directed to Claire Walker, Manager – Sponsorship & Site Services at the Dubai Racing Club on T: (971 4) 332 2277.
A variety of packages are available to suit all requirements whether entertaining for business or pleasure, in a group or with friends. Private boxes are located upstairs in the Maktoum and Millennium Grandstand however availability is limited and early reservation is recommended to avoid disappointment. For smaller groups we can offer the Dubai Restaurant, Links Terrace Restaurant or the informal atmosphere of the Del Mar Bar and the Gainsborough Lounge. Enquiries should be directed the Hospitality Department at the Dubai Racing Club on T: (971 4) 332 2277.
